WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS

BEHR is a family business currently being run by the fourth and fifth generation of the owners. Our origins lie in a small vegetable farm in Rosenweide, south of Hamburg in northern Germany. As early as 1895, vegetables were grown outdoors here and transported by barge across the Elbe to be sold at Hamburg’s wholesale market.

Not only are our plants growing, but also the company. Today, we cultivate around 4,000 hectares of vegetables, of which almost 600 hectares are grown according to organic standards, and sell around 60 different crops. Our cultivation areas are located in Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and southern Hesse in Germany, and in Spain.

Our customers include German food retailers, fresh vegetable processing companies in Germany and neighbouring European countries, as well as European food retailers.

QUALITY FROM EXPERIENCE

The name BEHR has always stood for high-quality vegetables and a trusting partnership with our customers. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. We want to offer consumers a safe product that looks and tastes great, promotes well-being and healthy nutrition, and meets all social and environmental requirements in production.

GREAT PRODUCTS GROWN BY BEHR

For us, innovation is the key to success. This applies to cultivation and harvesting practices that promote sustainable farming, as well as to the discovery, development and market launch of new types of salads and vegetables. BEHR introduced iceberg lettuce, mini romaine lettuce, Bluccoli, SalaRico and mini pak choi to the German market.

1977 – Iceberg lettuce

Rudolf Behr was the first to cultivate iceberg lettuce in Germany and popularized it in its now familiar appearance – with the head free of any loose leaves and packaged in a film.

1997 – MINI ROMAINE LETTUCE

In 1997, the BEHR company launched mini romaine lettuce on the German market as an alternative to the smaller, more compact Little Gem. With its mild, slightly sweet taste, mini romaine has established itself in Germany. Today it is one of the best-selling lettuces.

1998 – BLUCCOLI

Bluccoli is a combination pack of one small head of cauliflower and one small head of broccoli. Our company created and named ‘Bluccoli’ in the early 90s, but it wasn’t until 1998 that Bluccoli found its place in food retail. The name is now generally accepted and in common use.

2009 – SALARICO®

SalaRico combines the advantages of two classic lettuces: it’s crisp like iceberg lettuce and flavourful like romaine. We launched SalaRico in Germany in 2009. Since then, it has established itself as a real lover's salad.

2012 – MINI-PAK CHOI

Mini pak choi was launched by BEHR AG in 2012 as a mini version of pak choi on the German market. Pak choi has been a delicacy in South East Asia for many centuries. It is now considered a trend product here. Mini pak choi is characterized by wider, fleshy leaf ribs, which guarantee an even better taste.
