Our organic cress

Interesting facts

Our organic cress – commonly known as garden cress – is a member of the Brassica family. It probably originates from Asia and can still be found there in its wild form. The seeds of the garden cress have been found in the tombs of the Pharaohs and both the Romans and the Greeks are known to have appreciated garden cress.

Organic cress is an annual plant that can actually grow to a height of 20 to 30 cm. In Germany, however, organic cress is mainly used as a seedling. As a result, the plants are prepared for sale just one week after germination.

Organic cress has a slightly sharp taste and is a little bit reminiscent of radish, due to the mustard oil glycosides in both.

We grow our delicious organic cress at our organic site in Rosenweide (Lower Saxony). It is grown under protected cultivation all year round. The cress seeds are pre-soaked and then spread out on cultivation mats made of hemp fibre. The seeds germinate within a few hours. After a week, the seedlings are ready to be packed by hand into the sales trays.

With organic cress, you can easily cut off the desired amount with scissors and then rinse briefly in a sieve with a little water. Alternatively, take the cress out of its box, hold the tray slightly to the side under running water and then cut off the required amount with scissors or a knife just above the cultivation mat. Then either use the whole seedlings or cut them into small pieces with a sharp knife.

Organic cress is ideal as a tasty topping, for example, on a cream cheese open sandwich. Organic cress is also great in salads, as a topping on hot or cold dishes or as an ingredient in soups.

The cultivation mats made of hemp fibres, on which the organic cress germinates, are purely natural products and can be safely disposed of in the compost. When buying, you should make sure that the organic cress has a beautifully uniform green colour.

Organic cress can be stored for a good week with enough light, for example on the windowsill. However, make sure you don't forget to water the cress regularly. If you place the tray in the kitchen, the pleasant aroma of the organic cress will spread throughout the room.
