Organic Cherry Roma tomatoes

Interesting facts

The tomato originates from Central and South America. After the Americas were conquered by the conquistadors, tomatoes arrived in Spain. From there, they spread throughout Europe. Around 1900, the tomato also became known as a foodstuff in Germany and was mainly used in sauces, soups and salads in the southern regions. Nowadays, tomatoes are an integral part of our diets. Tomatoes belong to the nightshade or Solanaceae family and are therefore closely related to potatoes, peppers and aubergines.

The tomato is a mostly annual plant that can grow up to 4 m tall. The stalks and leaves of the tomato are green and slightly hairy. When the leaves are rubbed, they give off the smell so typical of tomatoes. Tomatoes come in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes. We grow the small organic Cherry Roma variety.

Organic Cherry Roma tomatoes produce bright red fruits that have a round-oval shape. They have an impressively sweet, aromatic taste. The Brix value is an indicator of the sweetness of a tomato. Our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes reach a Brix value of between 8 and 9, which is very high for tomatoes. In addition to the Brix value, a good aroma also depends on the balance between sweetness and acidity in our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes.

Due to their oval shape, they are somewhat reminiscent of mini dates or plums, which is why they are often referred to as date or plum tomatoes.

We grow our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes at our organic site in Rosenweide (Lower Saxony). When it’s too cold for tomatoes to grow in Germany, they grow under the Spanish sun at our farm in Balsapintada (Murcia).

Tomatoes are not frost hardy and cannot tolerate colder temperatures. They love the sun and should be protected from the wind. They also don’t like rain from above. That’s why we grow our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes in large polytunnels, where they are supplied with water via drip irrigation. This allows them to thrive and protects them from the cold, rain, wind and excessive sunlight. We set up bumblebee boxes in the polytunnels and count on the help of these lovely insects to pollinate the tomato flowers. Then the buds on the flowers can grow into beautiful tomatoes. If the flower is not pollinated, the flower rots and the fruit base dies off.

Tomatoes have a strong uptake with very high nutritional requirements. This is why they need a soil rich in humus. On loamy and clay-rich soils, tomatoes often develop more aromatic fruits. Growing organic Cherry Roma tomatoes is very time-consuming, as the tomato shoots have to be professionally 'trellised' every week so that they can grow nicely upwards. In addition, superfluous shoots are plucked out, i.e. they are snapped off so that only the main shoots can develop beautiful, full fruit. As the sweet fruits are also very sensitive to impact due to their thin skin, our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes are harvested manually.

Our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes are incredibly easy to prepare. First wash them in water. They can then either be eaten whole or cut into slices or cubes, depending on the method of preparation.

Organic Cherry Roma tomatoes can be served in many different ways. They are perfect in a salad, on a pizza or in a quiche. Skewers alternating with mini mozzarella balls and organic Cherry Roma tomatoes are a great option for finger food.

Many vegetables are stored in the vegetable compartment of the fridge, but this is not recommended for tomatoes as they are sensitive to cold and lose their flavour in cold temperatures. However, if the temperature is too warm, tomatoes tend to spoil more quickly. You should therefore ensure that the temperature is optimal in order to keep the tomatoes fresh for as long as possible. Cherry tomatoes, for example, prefer a temperature between 10 and 13° Celsius. Ideally, however, our organic Cherry Roma tomatoes should be eaten immediately after purchase, as they simply taste best fresh.
