Organic mini romaine lettuce

Interesting facts

The mini romaine lettuce is a miniature version of romaine lettuce. It is a member of the Asteraceae family. Romaine (or cos) lettuce has been known for at least 4,000 years and was originally only cultivated in Mediterranean countries.

Mini romaine lettuce was first launched by us – BEHR AG – in 1997 and has since become one of the most popular types of lettuce in Germany. We often speak of lettuce hearts, as the outer leaves of the mini romaine lettuce are removed during harvesting, leaving only the crisp, firm heart of the lettuce.

In terms of taste, you can look forward to a mild, slightly sweet aroma and a firm, crunchy leaf structure. The outer leaves are always green, with the heart leaves having an intense golden yellow colour.

We grow organic mini romaine lettuce at our organic site in Gresse (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania). There, the organic mini romaine lettuce grows in fields in and around Gallin/Kölzin (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania). The delicious organic mini romaine lettuce is also grown in our fields around Groß-Gerau (southern Hesse) and at our organic site in Rosenweide (Lower Saxony). When it’s too cold to grow lettuces in Germany, our organic mini romaine lettuce grows under the Spanish sun at our site in Balsapintada (Murcia).

They grow well in temperate climates, since the organic mini romaine lettuce is sensitive to changing external conditions. The young plants thrive perfectly on slightly lighter soils.

To prepare the organic mini romaine lettuce, simply cut off the stem at the bottom. Then rinse the whole leaves under cold water and use as required.

Organic mini romaine lettuce is incredibly versatile. It is most commonly used as a salad ingredient. Thanks to the firm structure of its leaves, it can also be served hot – simply fry briefly in the pan and season accordingly to create an extraordinary delicacy. The mini romaine lettuce also serves as a great finger food boat and will complement any party buffet.

Thanks to its firm structure, the organic mini romaine lettuce will not wilt so quickly and can therefore be stored in the fridge for a few days without any problems. It is always best to store the lettuce in its original packaging, as this will help to keep it fresh for longer. If you take out just one lettuce, you can wrap the other one in the film and store it in the vegetable drawer for a few days..
