Halloween pumpkins can be used to carve the best and scariest pumpkin faces to decorate gardens and houses at Halloween.

The festival of Halloween has Irish origins and dates back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. This festival translates as ‘the end of the summer’ and was always held on the eve of 1st November. The Celts believed that on this evening, the gateway to the underworld would be open and the dead could return to visit their relatives. Some welcomed the dead with candy and lights, others feared that the dead would seek revenge on them and therefore dressed up like dead people to ward off evil spirits. The word Halloween came about through Christianisation. In the 9th century, the eve of November 1 was called All Hallows Eve. Hence the word Halloween evolved.

The custom of hollowing out pumpkins and placing a light in them also goes back to a Celtic legend. A villain named Jack was denied access to heaven after his death because of his wrongdoings. But at the same time he was denied access to hell by the devil. Jack then set out to find a place to stay with a hollowed-out turnip and a burning piece of coal. Thus, the belief is that with an illuminated turnip – later pumpkin – one could keep the evil spirits and even the devil at bay. Since many Irish emigrated to America, they brought the custom with them to the USA. From there, the custom later returned to Europe. And Halloween is becoming increasingly popular in Germany, too. In almost every household, a pumpkin is hollowed out and carved and placed outside the door. But what most people don’t know is that Halloween pumpkins are also good to eat.

Their flavour is in no way inferior to other pumpkins and squash. The flesh tastes sweet and mild and can be used to create many delicious dishes. The Halloween pumpkin’s shell is firm yet easy to work with. These round, slightly ribbed pumpkins are also particularly suitable for making great Halloween lanterns due to their bright orange colour and their size of at least 25 cm in diameter.

We grow our wonderful and spooky Halloween pumpkins at our sites in Ohlendorf (Lower Saxony) and Büttelborn (Southern Hesse). The Halloween pumpkin is an annual, frost-sensitive plant that puts out long tendrils. Plenty of space is therefore needed for cultivation. Pumpkins and squash love humus-rich soils with an even supply of water. The pumpkins are harvested entirely by hand in late summer and into the autumn. It is important that the stem is also cut, otherwise rot can quickly develop at the cut.

If you want to use your Halloween pumpkin to create a delicious dish, you must first remove the skin. Then cut off the stem base at the top and the flower base on the underside. Now it is best to cut the pumpkin in half with a sharp knife. Scrape out the seeds from both halves with a spoon. Depending on the recipe you want to use, you can cut the pumpkin halves into slices or cubes of any size.

Halloween pumpkins can be made into a delicious pumpkin dish such as pumpkin soup, a quiche or a casserole. If you want to hollow out your pumpkin, you can also use the pulp you have taken out of the pumpkin to create delicious dishes such as a pumpkin stew or pumpkin rolls. The seeds of the Halloween pumpkin can be used to make a delicious snack. And so Halloween pumpkins are not only used for decoration, but the leftovers can also be used to make great dishes.

When buying a Halloween pumpkin, make sure the skin is smooth and intact and the stem base is still present.

An undamaged whole pumpkin will last for several months in the right conditions. Unfortunately, carving the pumpkin damages the skin and the pumpkin will start to spoil after 5-10 days. But to ensure that your pumpkin artwork lasts as long as possible, we have put together a few tips for you here:

  • Rubbing the cut edges with Vaseline helps to seal them so that the moisture cannot escape as quickly. This helps to keep the pumpkin fresh for longer. Placing a wet towel in the pumpkin and moistening it from time to time also helps to prevent the pumpkin from drying out so quickly.
  • If you want to illuminate the hollowed out pumpkin, you should use a candle with artificial light, as the heat of a real candle makes the pumpkin flesh deteriorate more quickly.
