Babyleaf

Interesting facts

Botanically speaking, babyleaf (Lactuca sativa var. crispa) is a member of the Asteraceae (Compositae) family and is probably derived from the prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) native to the Middle East.

What’s special about babyleaf is that, unlike most other lettuces, they do not form a head, but instead form leaf rosettes or individual loose leaves. Depending on the variety, babyleaf have light green to reddish-brown, smooth-edged, curled or oak-leaf-like leaves. We produce various red and green leaf lettuce varieties, as well as baby leaf chard, baby leaf beetroot and, of course, aromatic rocket. Depending on availability, our babyleaf are a mixture of the above-mentioned salad varieties. Since our babyleaf consists mainly of varieties that have been harvested young, the height is significantly lower than that of conventional babyleaf.

Thanks to the diverse mix of salads that make up our babyleaf, it tastes simply delicious. The red and green lettuce leaves have a slightly milder flavour and are accompanied by the aromatic and sometimes slightly sharp rocket, as well as chard and beetroot leaves, which add a slightly earthy taste. So you can look forward to a successful and varied salad composition with our babyleaf.

Babyleaf grows in fields just outside Hamburg, which are close to the River Elbe. This means that the lettuce enjoys a maritime climate and can thrive beautifully on loose, nutrient-rich soils. Babyleaf takes just 4–6 weeks from sowing to harvest. Each type of lettuce grows in its own field. The different lettuces are then harvested or cut using a harvesting machine. They are then packed in boxes and washed, dried and packed in the various packaging units for retailers.

All you have to do is clean and wash the babyleaf before eating it. The leaves are already bite-sized, so you won't have to chop the lettuce. Thanks to its different colours and shapes and its small leaves, babyleaf offers a perfect and extraordinary salad mixture that can be served with almost any dressing. Let your imagination run wild.

Babyleaf is not suitable for long storage. Therefore, it is best eaten immediately after purchase.
