Mini pak choi

Interesting facts

We have been growing our mini pak choi, pak choi's little sister, since 2012. Pak choi comes from Southeast Asia, where it has been considered a delicacy for many centuries. But the mini version we offer is also growing in popularity and has become a real trend in Germany recently.

Pak choi, also known as bok choy, translates as “white vegetable” from the Cantonese – a reference to the plant’s white leaf stalks and leaf veins, which, depending on the variety, may also have a light green colour.

Our mini pak choi has wide, fleshy leaf stalks that guarantee an even better flavour. The leaves are green, smooth and shiny. The leaf stalks are much lighter and form a harmonious overall appearance together with the leaves. Mini pak choi looks very much like chard, but is in fact related to Chinese cabbage rather than chard. You can also taste this in the nutty, mustard-like flavour, which is slightly milder than Chinese cabbage.

With its balanced, mild climate, our site in Gresse (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) offers the ideal growing conditions during the summer months. Mini pak choi loves the warmth and so in the winter months, from November to May, it is grown in our Spanish production facility in the Murcia region.

Mini pak choi is harvested manually. Immediately after being cut, it is washed, dried and packed on the harvester.

Mini pak choi is a vegetable with a short preparation time and therefore fits in well with the current trend for fast cooking. It simply needs to be rinsed briefly and can then be used as desired. The green leaves only need to be cooked for a few seconds.

Mini pak choi can be eaten raw as a salad, briefly steamed in a wok, used as an ingredient in a casserole or cooked as a side dish of vegetables. Mini pak choi is very popular for use in Asian cuisine. But it also tastes great when grilled or as a gratin with goat’s cheese. Please note that mini pak choi is heat-sensitive and should only be steamed briefly, otherwise its leaves will disintegrate.

It is best to consume the mini pak choi as fresh as possible, otherwise it can be kept wrapped in its film packaging for a short time in the vegetable compartment of the fridge. It is not suitable for freezing because its leaves are too tender.
