Bluccoli

Interesting facts

Bluccoli is an in-house creation by BEHR. It is a combination of a small broccoli and a small cauliflower, which together form a new product in one package. Both broccoli and cauliflower are descended from wild cabbage, which is native to the Mediterranean, and both belong to the Brassica family.

The name Bluccoli is made up of the names cauliflower and broccoli and was created by us in the 1990s for this product combination. Bluccoli are smaller heads of the two products that have been harvested young. Bluccoli is therefore also ideal for smaller households, leaving fewer leftover vegetables, as is often the case with large broccoli or cauliflower heads.

Broccoli stands out for its beautiful green colour and its pleasantly aromatic cabbage flavour. It consists mainly of flower buds and stems. The buds are still unripe flowers and are also known as florets. Both the florets and the stems are suitable for consumption.

Cauliflower has impressive white florets, which have a significantly milder, delicate cabbage flavour compared to other cabbage varieties. The two together make a perfect match for creating delicious vegetable dishes.

For our Bluccoli, we grow the cauliflower and the broccoli at our site in Gresse (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania). Both products prefer a maritime climate, i.e. slightly cooler temperatures with high humidity.

Both cauliflower and broccoli thrive in sandy soils, rich in humus and with a clay content. A good water supply is important to ensure an even supply of nutrients.

Harvesting both products still requires a lot of manual work. This is because the heads are cut by hand in the field and then removed from the large leaves. Care must be taken to avoid damaging the cauliflower and broccoli florets. Both the cauliflower and the broccoli are harvested earlier than normal to produce beautiful, small and compact heads for the Bluccoli. After harvesting, the cauliflower and broccoli are taken to our large hall in Gallin, where they are packaged into Bluccoli.

Preparing the Bluccoli is very easy, as almost the entire contents of the pack can be consumed. You just have to trim off the end of the stalk a little. The florets and the stems of both products can be eaten.

Bluccoli is ideal as a colourful vegetable side dish. Boil both heads in salted water and serve with a light sauce. You can also leave the cooked florets to cool and then use them to make a delicious summer salad. Cauliflower and broccoli also work very well in a casserole.

When buying, make sure that the cauliflower and broccoli do not have any dark spots on the florets and that the heads are nice and firm. Bluccoli can be kept for a few days in the vegetable drawer of the fridge.
