Lollo Rosso / Lollo Bionda (colourful lettuces)

Interesting facts

For us, the term 'colourful lettuces’ encompasses a variety of light-green to dark-red lettuces. These select salads include the lollo rosso and lollo bionda – a very curly salad in red and green – and the oakleaf lettuce, also in red and green.

Both the oakleaf and the lollo lettuce varieties are leaf lettuces (also known as 'cut-and-come-again' lettuces) and belong to the Asteraceae family. These two lettuce varieties do not form a firm head, like the iceberg lettuce, but instead form individual, loose leaf rosettes. The oakleaf lettuce owes its name to the leaf edges shaped like oak leaves. The name of the lollo bionda and lollo rosso or lollo rossa – as it was originally called – suggests that the lettuce was first cultivated in Italy.

The lollo and the oakleaf lettuce varieties impress with their aromatic, fresh flavour. They are also a real feast for the eyes, with their bright and beautifully shaped leaves.

The delicious lollo rosso and lollo bionda and the red and green oakleaf lettuce thrive on fields just outside Hamburg in Reinbek (Schleswig-Holstein) and Bornheim (North Rhine-Westphalia), near the Rhine river.

The lollo and the oakleaf lettuce are seedling crops. These delicious leaf lettuces are grown exclusively outdoors to allow them to develop a beautiful colour and firm leaves.

The lollo and the oakleaf lettuce love sandy soils. The lettuces are planted with a special machine from the beginning of May to the beginning of August. They can be harvested after 4–6 weeks. The lettuces are cut by hand and then washed and packed on the field in the harvester.

The colourful lettuces should be cleaned and thoroughly washed before eating. Due to their loose-fitting, curly leaves, they can sometimes be slightly sandier than, for example, head-forming lettuces. Then simply chop as required. That’s it!

Thanks to their different colours and shapes, colourful lettuces are a perfect and unusual salad mix that can be served with almost any dressing. Let your imagination run wild. Colourful salads can be stored briefly in the vegetable compartment of the fridge before preparing them. The best way to do this is to leave them wrapped in their packaging, as this will keep the lettuces fresh for longer. When buying, you should make sure that the leaves have a beautiful, strong colour and that you do not find any muddy or brown-coloured leaves.
