Brussels sprouts were first cultivated near Brussels in the 19th century, whence its popularity spread – hence the name.
A temperate climate provides ideal conditions for growing Brussels sprouts. The florets are harvested from September to January because Brussels sprouts don’t mind a little frost – in fact, it is even said to improve the taste.
Remove the outside leaves from the sprouts, shorten the stalk a little and make cross-cuts in it. This way, it cooks evenly. Add a teaspoon of butter to the cooking water for an even better taste. Brussels sprouts are traditionally seasoned with salt and nutmeg.
